Changing Landscape
LMAG
became aware that users of the outdoors in Lochaber had a number
of ideas and suggestions regarding projects which may significantly
improve the quality of access in Lochaber.
The outdoor economy of Lochaber depends on two of its greatest
assets
- The quality of the outdoor environment
- The quality and skill of local people participating in outdoor
activities
Both these assets attract large numbers of visitors to Lochaber
each year. However Lochaber’s position as one of the UK’s
premier outdoor destinations is very much under threat by access
developments throughout the UK.
Our competitor regions particularly in the English Lake District,
the Welsh National Park and in Scotland Cairngorm are racing ahead
of Lochaber in developing access projects that will attract visitors
away from the undeveloped Lochaber.
It is clear that Lochaber must respond to the challenge of our
competitors
‘The status quo is no longer an option’
In addition to facing up to the competition from other mountain
regions it is worth pointing out that the development of access
projects in Lochaber not only will have economic benefits but considerable
social utility for the people of Lochaber
This is possible by development of a number of projects that will
ensure our pre-eminence and continued economic prosperity
